Teaser – Pics I Took Wednesday Downtown

002

Part horse trough, part human and dog water fountain, this 1915 relic is juxtaposed against modern life.

This is the river. In the background is a World War II battleship and memorial. A few cousins have their names there who were killed in action.

May we venture to say our perambulation a le promenade ends here?

Margaret Mitchell called and she wants her flag back, Bubba.

The infamous Seedy China Hot and Sour Soup. The only bizarre happening that day was a wealthy-seeming woman old enough to know better if she was doing what I think she was doing.

Old Enough: You just short changed me $2.00. This is the second time you did it.

Chinese Woman: Next time we count it out for you, yes?

Old Enough: I always only have twenty dollar bills.

(Oh, the crosses some of us have to bear!)

  1. So, does this mean you speak with a soft southern drawl? Love the photos, it looks warm and sunny and warm there. The fountain trough is beautiful, I have only seen historical photos of them and wasn’t aware there were any still standing. Does it still work?

  2. Lisa,
Loved the fountain (yes I probably am rather predicable on that one) and giggled at the lady who should have known better.
If it had happened before to me I’d have had correct change this time.
Maybe she got rich by counting the pennies, and maybe it was the principle that she thought the lady was “taking” the tip instead of her offering it, or maybe she was just sick of being ripped off.
Who’s to know if she’s really rich either?, appearances can be deceiving. It’s a tricky one…
I once saw a guy in Covent Garden (London, UK) begging and the friends who were showing me around said that since their workplace was close by, all the colleagues would see him and over the years they figured out that this guy was making more than 150 British Pounds every day from tourists *and* that he had a nice flat nearby. (wow)
Just to say that it’s hard to have an opinion unless you know all the background stuff on both sides.
I’m very much liking the photographs, get your camera out more often for us yes?

    • OK will do on the pics! I wouldn’t put it past that woman to steal. Weird people eat there, said the kettle, though who knows.
I’m the sort of ninny who will give a dollar to a guy even if I knew he was faking b/c I’d want someone to help me if I were in trouble.

  3. Great pics, Lisa. The fountain is gorgeous and I like the words “our perambulation a le promenade ends here.” It sounds so chic.

I also liked your story at the end, which made me laugh. Taking into account everything that Kiwi said, I still have to ask why a person would only take out $20 bills? What’s wrong with small change? I know it can potentially make a hole in the pocket, but it can be useful for the small stuff. You’re also less likely to be ripped off.

  4. I love these pics! I can’t help but wonder where you are in Florida. (Mostly because I am in FL, too)You cracked me up with you Margret Mitchell comment and the change incident. One question: MacDonald serves Chinese food where you’re at?
